Frequently Asked Questions

Higher level History students write six essays across their three external assessments plus a longer essay on their internally assessed historical investigation, so it is critical they understand how to develop strong arguments which integrate various perspectives and provide well-substantiated arguments. The Essay Question Practice feature is designed to do precisely that! Each is built around a Guiding Question that mirrors the style of essay prompts on Paper 1, Paper 2 or Paper 3 and includes a set of sources and scaffolded questions designed to help students develop a strong essay for the final response.

The answer depends on where you are in the IB History course and what your particular goals are. Essay Question Practice can be used for both acquisition of new knowledge about a variety of topics in IB History or revision in preparation for assessments at school and exams. The scaffolded questions will help you consider the relevant pieces of knowledge for the question as well as the varied approaches and perspectives on the topic you might want to consider as you develop your argument. Furthermore, if you need to build up your content knowledge about particular events or individuals relevant to the question, the provided sources can help guide you in that process. New topics will be added to the Essay Question Practice feature continuously, so be on the lookout for more!

That depends. Some questions will demand you use a particular source in a way that is very similar to the questions on Paper 1 (even if the topic being covered is connected to Paper 2 or Paper 3). Others will simply expect you to recall your own knowledge to respond. Some questions, just like the extended response questions on Paper 1, will require you to do both! While Paper 2 and Paper 3 don’t provide any sources to support your responses to the essay questions on the HL exam, you can use them as needed to acquire new knowledge. If you really want to challenge yourself when you write the final response to the Guiding Question, don’t look at the sources! Just remember that the essay prompt style on Paper 1 is very different from Paper 2 and Paper 3, so practice accordingly.
